Why aren't you considering to go from Lecco to Chiasso via Molteno and Albate ? The route is somewhat more pleasant and the ATR trains are more modern. Check the timetable, there are not many trains but it is possible that you have to change only once, otherwise twice. I.e. take either a Lecco-Milano via Molteno (and stop in Molteno, then take a Molteno-Como) or a Lecco-Como. In all cases stop at Albate, and take the TILO train to Chiasso which originates there (nice connection, just cross to platform 4, train will be waiting for you empty).
